Typically, sliding sash windows comprise two sliding sashes that move up and down within their frame, supported either by weights or by modern spring balances. They have evolved over the centuries and the windows we are replacing today are very elaborate, in-keeping with Victorian tastes, with deep bottom rails, decorative horns and contoured glazing bars.
