KAT provides an elegant solution for a period property.

Case Study | Box Sash Windows,

When Martin and Richard bought an attractive period house in Macclesfield, Cheshire in 2018, their intention was to renovate both internally and externally. With plans to retain the original features inside the property such as ceiling coving and timber flooring, they decided it was a good time to reinstate the classic looks and original aesthetics at the front of the house too.

When originally built, the house was fitted with Wooden Sliding Sash Windows which were painted white. Whilst windows of this type invariably add character to a building, they also require regular painting and maintenance to ensure that they can stand up to the wind and rain without deteriorating over time.

In the 1980’s it became popular to replace Wooden Sliding Sash Windows with uPVC Mock Sash Windows. The upside of this was that they combined low maintenance with greater warmth and were more cost effective than buying timber replacements. The downside was that they usually lacked the character and charm of Sliding Sash Windows.

When Martin and Richard began to research the possibility of removing the casement windows and replacing them with either Timber or uPVC Sliding Sash Windows, they quickly concluded that as the required sizes were over 1.7 metres wide and 1.8 metres high, they would need a company which could make windows to a bespoke design. They were also keen to allow as much natural light to flood into their home as their windows would allow, so decided not to include horizontal and vertical astragal bars in their design.

After searching for inspiration on the internet, they discovered that the specialist knowledge and glazing expertise they needed was right on their doorstep, at KAT in Macclesfield.

Besides offering slim sight lines and the large glass area they needed to maximise natural light, they found that KAT’s Elegance range of Windows are modern, secure, virtually maintenance free and offer excellent thermal properties to keep their home warm.

KAT was able to handcraft their chosen uPVC Sliding Sash Windows to their exact dimensions and completed delivery within two weeks. Once the windows were expertly fitted by their builder Nigel Mellor, they could relax, knowing that the timeless character of their home has been preserved both inside and out, just as they intended.

The authentic period look and exceptional finish of KAT’s Elegance range can enhance the exterior of any property. From six feet away it is extremely difficult to tell if the window is timber or uPVC, making it an extremely elegant solution for homes of character.
